Yes, I want to register for the upcoming 7 day reset.
Life, experience, tragedy, heartbreak, lost jobs, lost friendships, lost moments……life gets messy at times. It’s hard at times. Sometimes the suffering becomes unbearable. We can’t see past the veil of pain. We can’t see a way out. We can’t see the hope for a better future. These are the deep, soul changing moments in life we often feel from our messes. We question who we are, we question the choices we’ve made, we question our path, our purpose, our sanity, our decision making process. However, the more messes I experience the more compassion I have for others. It opens you up to feel more. One of my favorite Leonard Cohen quotes is, “there’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in”, sometimes we need the cracks to experience the light.
I recently viewed the documentary “Yoga Is“, Sean Corn is one of the famous yoga teachers interviewed in the documentary and she said something that stuck with me. She said, “sometimes our biggest wounds in life become our life purpose. Who better to help the addict than the recovered addict, who better to help the abused spouse than the person who has been there. Who better in these situations than the person who has experienced it and has the wisdom of being on the other side.” I can have a lot of passion to work with drug addicts, but I’ve never been there, I don’t know what it’s like to be addicted to drugs. However, the person who has entered the darker depths of this can relate, they know and they’ve experienced all aspects.
Danielle LaPorte calls this our service. Allowing our suffering to become our acts of service. When someone else has to walk though the same mess, you can be there.
Sometimes our messes are actually our gifts. In Buddhism the approach to pain is when you’re in suffering, the notion that your agony might have some divine utility helps you endure.
Change often happens when really 2 things occur.
1.) Something happens in life that forces us to change or,
2.) We learn a new idea or a new learning comes along.
So, let’s tackle the first one, when something happens in life that forces us to change. Usually, these type of forced changes can feel like a blunt blow or an universal smack across the head. Sometimes it can masquerade as an illusion our life is literally falling apart. However, every now and then, maybe our life needs to fall apart to make space for something new. Maybe we need that person, that job, that bad habit, that lifestyle to fall away so that we can start paving a new path. It can be heartbreaking, sad, mysterious, confusing, maddening and paralyzing, yes all at the same time.
What if you can entertain the idea that there is a bigger plan in place for you. Regardless of your beliefs, what if the universe or God or whatever you want to call it does conspire in your favor? I’m going to call this universe for the sake of this post. So, what if the universe noticed you were playing too small in life. What if you are dimming your own light with the illusion of fear. What if you were meant to drive down a different path so that you could change the world in a bigger way, have those incredible experiences or meet the love of your life?
In my experience, every heartbreak, setback, paralyzing event in my life has either set me on a new & more amazing path or it’s helped shaped the person I am today. Experienced of all kinds give us a richer history and deeper context in life. With each heartbreak, I have gained a deeper level of compassion for others. With each set back, I’m reminded to check in with my ego & opportunity to reevaluate my priorities. Now, I have to honest, it’s not always quick, it’s not always obvious & good god, it can take years sometimes to figure this out.
So, for me, its about trusting in the process, trusting in the knowledge that it always works itself out. However, don’t be fooled in just sitting back and letting things just “work themselves out”, you may have to take some action, do some clean up & ultimately do the work.
Next, change happens when we learn a new idea or a new learning comes along. This one can come in all forms. We learn a new approach in life, we learn our health is failing unless we take massive action, we learn a significant other isn’t being honest or we learn a better way to expand our life. Now, ideally you are setting yourself up to be exposed to new ideas and not just sitting back waiting on new learnings to fall in your lap. Which, they will if you wait long enough. However, these aren’t the new learning I want to focus on. I’m a learner and I absolutely love discovering new ideas & exposing myself to different cultures, lifestyles and overall experiences. It’s personal development and honestly if you aren’t setting aside time for personal development, how can you possibly grow, expand and evolve in life? This is the ultimate experience in life. It makes life fun, it makes you fun, more interested & interesting. If you find yourself feeling uninspired in life, take on a new learning of some type. This is the ultimate avenue to inspiration.
